Welcome!

1 of 2Welcome to our Hawaii Pacific University Libraries Orientation! Here you will learn about the services and resources the libraries have to offer.

This box contains tips for how to use the website to the right.

Use the arrows below to navigate through the tutorial.

HPU Libraries Homepage

This is the HPU Libraries homepage. From here you can find information about the libraries, and begin your library research.

First, let's explore our library locations. Click the "Contact Us" button to the right of the search box.

Here you will find our contact info, as well as info on our locations.

How many locations do we have?

All locations have plenty of space for students. We have desks and carrels for solitary study, and tables and study rooms for collaboration.

All locations also have PC and Mac computers, as well as printers and scanners.

Click "Library Hours" to see when we are open. We have special hours for study week and finals week at the end of every semester.

Take a guess: are we open for longer or shorter hours during those grueling end-of-semester weeks?

Click "HPU Libraries & Learning Commons" underneath the HPU logo at the top of the page to return to the libraries homepage.

Study Rooms

From the homepage, look for the "Services" section. Underneath "Services," click "Study Rooms." A new tab will open. Come back to this tab for instructions.

The Library at Waterfront and the Learning Commons have group study rooms available for students to book. These are spacious rooms that are great for collaboration.

Atherton Library has five small study rooms that can be booked by one person at a time. These rooms work well for videoconferencing, for example.

Under "Book a Study Room," click on your preferred location.

Great! You can click "Hawaii Pacific University Libraries" at the top of the page to return to the libraries homepage.

Resources

Now for our resources and how to find them.

Our collections of books and other physical resources, such as print journals, magazines, newspapers, and DVDs, are located at the Library at Waterfront and at Atherton Library. The Learning Commons doesn't have any books, but there are ample study spaces and computers.

You can borrow five items at a time, and most books you can keep for 56 days.

Underneath "Services," click "Borrowing."

How many times can students renew most books?

Beyond physical resources, we have a large collection of electronic resources that are accessible from both on and off-campus. Head back to the homepage to learn more.

HPU Discovery

Let's check out HPU Discovery. This is the big search box in the middle of the homepage. Discovery enables you to search our physical collections as well as some of our electronic resources.

If you're looking for a specific resource type, you can click the corresponding tab above the search box, like "Books," "Periodicals," etc. Otherwise, you can go with the default tab to search "Everything."

Try searching "Everything" for "indigenous invisibility."

When you click "Search," the results page will load in a new tab. Come back to this tab for next steps.

On the results tab, look at the left side of the page, under "Refine This Search." You can use the "filters" or "limiters" listed here to narrow your search results according to the criteria you set.

Under "Format," check the box next to "Book."

From this list, find an ebook that looks interesting to you. To view the full text of the ebook, click the blue "View eBook" button. (If you're off-campus, you may be asked to login using your MyHPU username and password.)

A new tab will open, from which you can read the full text.

Navigate back to the results list.

Now, refine the search again by leaving only the box next to "Print Book" checked.

Sometimes the library has both the print and electronic version of a book. If we have both, they will both show up in the item's record.

You can tell that we have a book in physical format because there will be a library location listed for the book. Also, to the right of library location, a call number will be listed.

The call number is like a book's address. It tells you where on the shelf if lives. Librarians can always help you find books.

From this list, find a book that looks interesting.

You can also transfer books from Waterfront to Atherton and vice versa, so that you can pick them up at the more convenient location.

To do so, click on the title of the book you want, and then click the blue "Place hold" button. In the tab that opens up, you would enter your MyHPU login info, and then fill out the form. You would be notified through email when your book is ready for pickup at your specified location.

Now, back in the results list, look at the buttons on the bottom right corner of the book's box. The buttons say "cite," "link," "email," and "save."

Click "cite," then select your preferred citation style.

The "link" button will provide the item's permalink, so you can come back to it later.

You can use the "email" button to send the resource to yourself.

Interlibrary Loan (ILL)

You can also use the filters in the "Refine This Search" section to look for resources published in other formats, within a specific time frame, and more.

If you look at the "Held by Library" section, you'll see that the box for Hawaii Pacific University is already checked. This means you are searching within our collection. You can search beyond it too, by clicking "Libraries Worldwide." This will show you resources both within and outside of our collection.

If you find a resource held by another library that you would like access to, click on the item's title, and then click the blue "Request Item through Interlibrary Loan" button.

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a program where HPU Libraries borrows from other libraries to lend to you. Fill out the ILL form to request the item.

**Due to COVID-19, most libraries have paused their lending of physical books. If it is a physical book you would like to request, please specify which two chapters of the book you would like. That is the maximum libraries are allowed to scan and share under copyright laws.

Databases

Beyond HPU Discovery, we have additional tools and resources for you to use in your library research.

Navigate back to the libraries' homepage and click "View a list of databases" under the search box.

The Databases page will load in a new tab. Come back to this tab for next steps.

Databases are online collections of quality resources, often curated for a specific subject.

In the new tab, from the "All Subjects" dropdown menu, select the subject that best matches your major at HPU. The database list will refresh with some recommendations.

Research Guides

Navigate back to the libraries' homepage. Look under "Resources" and click "Research Guides."

The Research Guides page will load in a new tab. Come back to this tab for next steps.

Research guides are web pages put together by librarians. They provide subject-specific research tips and resource recommendations.

Workshops & Events

Navigate back to the libraries' homepage. Under "About" click "Library Calendar" to see what we have planned. We offer workshops and events throughout the year.

Come back to this tab when you are done.

True or false? We have an HPU Libraries book club aimed at advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion among the HPU community.

Research Help

Navigate back to the libraries' homepage.

Librarians are available to help along any step in the research process. You can meet with a librarian in person at any of our three locations. You can drop by anytime, or schedule a research consultation in advance.

To schedule a research consultation, under "Services," click "Research Consultations." On the new tab that opens, you can find your librarian subject specialist and book an appointment right away!

How many librarian subject specialists are there?

Now that you know where to find our contact info, you can also contact us via email and phone.
