Let's search for a journal title, Marine pollution bulletin.
At which library/collection can you find this journal?
Beginning January 2017, HPU libraries launched the new library catalog, HPU Discovery (OCLC WorldShare).
Unlike the old library catalog which excluded periodicals (journals, magazines, and newspaper), the new HPU Discovery allows you to search for articles, books, ebooks, videos, and other materials at any of the HPU Libraries.
Once you are in Pipeline, go to the Libraries tab and click on Library Catalog to begin your search.
If you have already created a library account and it is your first time using the HPU Discovery, you need to create a new password to use/access the HPU Discovery.
Go to the HPU Discovery and click "Sign in" on the top right corner of the screen. Then, click the "Set/rest password" link to create your password. It will prompt you to enter your user name.
Enter your HPU ID # as your user name and click "Request new password." An email will be sent to your HPU email address associated with your account containing a link that lets you set your password. Click this link, and create your password.
Note: The link will expire in 24 hrs. In case you misplace or forget your password, it can be reset by repeating the steps. (Go back to the tutorial by clicking the Guide on the Side tab on your browser)
Let's search for books about coral reef using a basic keyword search. Type coral reef in the search box and click the "Magnifying glass" icon.
The Keyword search in the library catalog searches for records where the words "coral" and "reef" appear anywhere in the title, author, subject, or notes fields. Once your search is complete, notice the amount of search results the catalog has retrieved.
How many search results did you retrieve?
Because the initial HPU Discovery search would include all of the library materials, your search results tend to be too large. In order to find only books/ebooks, you would want to narrow your search by selecting "Book" from the top 6 formats and your search would yield only books and ebook titles.
Let's keep revising your search using the filters to find print books about "coral reef" published within the last 10 years available at Atherton Library.
Choose "Atherton Library" in the Library, choose "Print book" in the format, scroll down and select "Last 10 years" in the Year. Your results will automatically be sorted.
Now, browse through the results and open the record for the Coral reef fishes. Indo-Pacific and Caribbean (2002 print edition).
What is the call number to locate the book in the library?
At which library/collection can you find this book?
Which of the following subject terms is NOT listed in this record? (Click "Description")
To revise further, click "Advanced Search" right below the search box.
You can also do a subject search to find more relevant titles for your subject. Click the back space on top of the browser to go back to the Advanced search page and type "enzymes" in the search box.
Note: change the search option from "Keyword" to "Subject" from the drop down menu. Limit your search by selecting filters for Book/ Hawaii Pacific University and click Search.
How many books did you find in your search?
If you already know the name of the title, keep using the Advanced Search, enter the title in the search box and select Title option using the drop down menu.
Let's do a title search for the following title:
A Short Guide to Writing about Biology
Note: change the search option from keyword to title. Limit your search by selecting filters for Book/ Hawaii Pacific University and click Search.
Click on the title, A Short Guide to Writing about Biology, from the result list to answer the quiz below.

You can also search by ISBN and the title in the simple keyword search.
You can also search by Accession Number, Author, Subject, ISSN, article and Journal title, and etc. (Note: change the search option accordingly)
If you want to place a hold on a book(s), click "Place hold."
When prompted to log in, enter your user name and password (if you have already created a library account). Choose a "Pickup location", enter other options if applicable, and click "Submit."
If you encounter any issues with placing a hold, you can choose a different title.
Click here to go back to Sign in the HPU Discovery. Select "My Account" from the drop down menu at the top right side of the screen to view/modify contact information, check message from the library, view checkouts / holds/ chargers, and etc. You may be prompted again to log in.
